Sovereign Hill Adventure!

On Friday the 16th Grade 5/6 got on a bus and travelled to Sovereign Hill.  It was really fun!

When we got there, the first thing my group did was go to the Education Centre. We were a little late because the bus didn’t come till 9.30. When we were at the Education Centre we learnt that you can get so much information from just one picture. Afterwards we got a box and told the group about what was in the box. Before we left we got to choose to dress up, play games or use the ink pens. I chose to use the ink pens.

During lunch we went to the lolly store and got our lollies. It was a really hard choice but finally I settled on a huge lollipop for $5.50 and a bag of raspberry drops for $3.00. They are so DELICIOUS!

Our second lesson was going in the Red Hill Mine. We walked carefully through the mine and climbed a ladder. The mine showed a “fake” version of the 2nd biggest nugget in the world. It was scary and so fun!

Next we got to have a free explore around Sovereign Hill for one hour. We looked at the tents and theChineseVillage. On the way to the Bowling Saloon we had a look in the cottages. The cottages were really small. We finally got to the Bowling Saloon. We ran there. We got to have one bowl. It was pretty hard. You had to use two hands instead of one. I knocked over a few pins.

Lastly we had to go down to the gold panning. We had to shovel out tiny rocks, put them in a pan then mix them all around and hope for a speck of gold. Audrey found a speck. Unfortunately I didn’t find anything. It was still REALLY FUN!

Sadly we had to leave. We had such a fun day! On the bus Audrey and I really wanted to lick our lollipops, but we weren’t allowed. When we got to school I went straight home. I HAD SUCH A GOOD TIME AT SOVEREIGN HILL!

Neave and I panning for gold!

Melbourne Zoo Report!!!

The Melbourne zoo is a great place to go to for the family on the holidays. You can see lots and lots of animals such as types of monkeys, cats, elephants, giraffes, tigers, lions, bears, butterflies and lots more.

The Melbourne zoo is obviously in Melbourne. The butterflies are kept in a butterfly house and are kept in 30oC heat and at night it is kept in 22oC. The platypuses are kept in the dark.

Butterflies have 2 wings on each side and both sides are identical. The tigers have and orange back with black stripes. No two tigers have the same stripes in the same spot. Elephants are mostly grey. They have a trunk, big ears and long curved tusks. The Melbourne Zoo is trying really hard to make the enclosures bigger than they were before for the animals to walk around and explore more like the wild.

Melbourne zoo are keeping the animals in captivity not only for people to look at them but to do science on them like finding out extinction and endangered species.

  • Melbourne zoo is free for kids on the weekends, holidays and public holidays.

  • You can adopt animals.

  • Melbourne zoo is a part of Zoos Victoria which includes Werribee Open Range Zoo, Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary.

Report on Gymnastics!!

Gymnastics is a sport of strength, flexibility and balance. In gymnastics you can compete once you get into a level. In women’s gymnastics you do four apparatus’; bar, beam, floor, vault. My favourites are bar and beam.

Here are some pictures of women’s gymnastics:

You can do gymnastics anywhere. At the gym, home, beach, grass, pools. For safety you should only do your hard tricks at the gym, not on grass or any hard floor.

In gymnastics you flip, turn, jump, leap and tumble. On vault you flip over the vault table. On bar you swing and do all sorts of tricks. On beam you do handstands, cartwheels, walkovers and flips. On floor you tumble from one end to the other.

Gymnastics is full of interesting facts.

  • The beam is 4 inches wide.

  • Nadia Comaneci was a 14 year old girl fromRomania and she was awarded a perfect ten in the 1976 Olympic Games.

  • Women were first awarded apparatus medals in 1952.

City or Country!

I think the country is a safer and better place to be in than the city.

Firstly, in the country there is heaps of space to play and run around with friends. In the city the is buildings, houses and busy roads.

Secondly if your talking about the farm kind of country there are animals I mean who doesn’t love animals. There are all sorts like chickens, sheep, cows, horses, pigs and sheep dogs. In the city you can’t keep those animals in your backyard.

Thirdly, The country is a safer place to be in because there aren’t as many cars, houses and buildings. For little kids it isn’t safe for them to cross roads in the city but in the countryyou can keep kids away from roads beacause there aren’t as many.

There all the reasons why I like the country better than the city.

JA JA BINKS!!

This is our classroom frog, Ja Ja Binks!

We got him in Term 1.  He has a green stripe on his back. We had another frog but on our excursion the frog got out and dryed out. So he had to leave us.  Ja ja binks has more things to play and jump on now. He must be really happy in his terrarium. He has a big log that he likes to hide in!

Barwon Heads Excursion

On Tuesday 30th of April 5/6 Barwon and Kardinia went to Barwon Heads and we had 3 sessions.
Our first session was with Steve. We went to the rock pools and we saw heaps of rock pool creatures. Some people got to hold a star fish. The star fish felt hard and sometimes a bit squishy. We saw an elephant slug they are black.  We saw some soldier crabs on the beach. There were so many! We got to pick the up and have crab races. That was fun!
Our second session was with a lady named Maddy. She talked about what things can destroy the environment. She talked about seals, cats and dogs and other animals. She said if a seal comes to shore it means they are sick and if you go near a sick seal they try to swim home but they don’t make it home because they are sick. She also said that if a cat stays out at night they can become ferrel like other cats. She also said that you need to scoop your dogs poop because it might get in the barwon river. Then we looked at all the stuffed animals there.
Our last session was with Rose and we went and sat down near the estuary. We made a polluted estuary with all disgusting things. There was salt, car wash, car oil, grass, dog poop, dirt and other gross things. I got to put in the dog poop. Well it wasn’t real dog poop. I thing it was these squishy nuts or something. When I saw what the estuary looks like I thought that was really disgusting and we should try and stop it happening.
I thought the excursion was awesome and I hope we have another excursion like that.
